Study of scintillation light collection, production and propagation in a 4 tonne dual-phase LArTPC
2020
The $3 \times 1 \times 1$ m$^3$ demonstrator is a dual phase liquid argon time projection chamber that has recorded cosmic rays events in 2017 at CERN. The light signal in these detectors is crucial to provide precise timing capabilities. The performances of the photon detection system, composed of five PMTs, are discussed. The collected scintillation and electroluminescence light created by passing particles has been studied in various detector conditions. In particular, the scintillation light production and propagation processes have been analyzed and compared to simulations, improving the understanding of some liquid argon properties.
Inner shell ionization of argon in ECRIS plasma
2018
Abstract The volumetric K α emission rate of argon emitted from the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) heated plasmas of the JYFL (University of Jyvaskyla, Department of Physics) 14 GHz ECR ion source (ECRIS) and the 14.5 GHz Grenoble Test Source (GTS) at iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences have been measured to gain an understanding of the influence of the ion source tune parameters on the absolute inner shell ionization rate. It was observed that the behaviour of the ionization rate and the extracted ion beam currents react differently, depending the parametric sweep performed. The neutral gas pressure and incident microwave power was found to have the strongest influence on…
Influence of annealing atmosphere on photoelectrochemical response of TiO2 nanotubes anodized under controlled hydrodynamic conditions
2021
[EN] The influence of three annealing atmospheres (air, nitrogen and argon) and the use of controlled hydrodynamic conditions (from 0 to 5000 rpm) on morphological, structural, chemical and photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2 nanotubes have been evaluated. For this purpose, different characterization techniques have been used: Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman Confocal Laser Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Incident Photon-to-electron Conversion Efficiency measurements, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, Mott-Schottky analysis and photoelectrochemical water splitting tests. According to the results, it can be concluded that both hy…
Simulation of the influence of gas flow on melt convection and phase boundaries in FZ silicon single crystal growth
2015
Abstract Axisymmetric calculations of inert gas flow in a floating zone puller are carried out using an open source software package OpenFOAM. Transient axisymmetric melt flow in liquid silicon and quasi-stationary shape of silicon phase boundaries are calculated using a specialized program FZone. Additional heat losses at silicon surfaces caused by the gas flow are taken into account for argon and helium, while maintaining the height of molten zone by adjusting inductor current. Cooling causes an increase of electromagnetic force, heat sources and more intense melt flow, while crystallization interface deflection decreases. The shear stress of gas flow is found to be an order of magnitude …
Treating cockroach phobia using a serious game on a mobile phone and augmented reality exposure: A single case study
2011
In vivo exposure has proved its efficacy in the treatment of specific phobias; however, not all patients benefit from it. Communication and information technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) have improved exposure treatment adherence and acceptance. Serious games (SG) could also be used in order to facilitate exposure treatment. A line of research on SG is emerging which focuses on health issues. We have developed a SG for the treatment of cockroach phobia that uses a mobile phone as the application device. This work examines results of an N = 1 study about whether the use of this mobile game can facilitate treatment of this specific phobia preparing her for th…
Modes vārdu lietojums lietišķās angļu valodas tekstu korpusā
2015
Tādēļ šī zinātniskā darba mērķis ir izpētīt, izanalizēt un aprakstīt modes vārdu lietojumu, it sevišķi to lietojumu lietišķajā angļu valodā. Lai sasniegtu uzstādīto mērķi, tika izpētīts, izanalizēts un salīdzināts četru modes vārdu game-changing, innovative, thought leader un visionary lietojums vispārīga…
Mir-661: A key Factor in Embryo-Maternal dialog With Potential Clinical Application to Predict Implantation Outcome?
2015
Implantation resulting in a full-term pregnancy is, by large, more than a passive process in which the developed conceptus is passively glued to the uterus through adhesive molecules. It is the result of a perfectly orchestrated dialog between a viable embryo and a receptive endometrium, through a mixture of paracrine and juxtacrine processes in which many key proteins and growth factors play fundamental roles (Pellicer et al., 2002.) Since their discovery, microRNAs have become prominent regulatory candidates, providing missing links for a few biological pathways in this process, although their exact role in human normal embryo formation and endometrial preparation for pregnancy remains un…
A purity monitoring system for liquid argon calorimeters
2005
Abstract For liquid argon calorimeters electronegative impurities dissolved in the medium degrade the detector response and deteriorate the energy resolution, especially at high energies. A concept for a purity monitoring system for liquid argon calorimeters has been developed and is presented here. Special combined monitors of 241 Am- and 207 Bi-cells are used to monitor the concentration of impurities. The working principle as well as results from test measurements are discussed.
Protease-mediated processing of Argonaute proteins controls small RNA association
2020
SummarySmall RNA pathways defend the germlines of animals against selfish genetic elements and help to maintain genomic integrity. At the same time, their activity needs to be well-controlled to prevent silencing of ‘self’ genes. Here, we reveal a proteolytic mechanism that controls endogenous small interfering (22G) RNA activity in the Caenorhabditis elegans germline to protect genome integrity and maintain fertility. We find that WAGO-1 and WAGO-3 Argonaute (Ago) proteins are matured through proteolytic processing of their unusually proline-rich N-termini. In the absence of DPF-3, a P-granule-localized N-terminal dipeptidase orthologous to mammalian DPP8/9, processing fails, causing a cha…
Soft tissue integration of different abutment surfaces: An experimental study with histological analysis
2021
OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether abutment surface and surface bio-activation have an effect on soft tissue morphogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS 36 patients (36 implants) were included. Abutments were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 9): Smooth Surface-MAChined (MAC), Ultrathin Threaded Microsurface (UTM), MAC Plasma of Argon activated (Plasma-MAC), and UTM Plasma of Argon activated (Plasma-UTM). After 2 months of healing, soft tissue samples were collected and prepared for histological analysis. The margin of the peri-implant mucosa (PM), the apical extension of the barrier epithelium (aJE), and the apical location of the abutment (AM) were identified. Significances of differences among gro…
